Sometimes I sit and think of the different jobs many people have and the reason for doing such. I could never be a veterinarian because I wouldn’t be able to see an animal in pain. I could also never be a foot doctor because for me, they are just disgusting and couldn’t even touch them. I also would never be able to be a dermatologist because zits are DISGUSTING. But many people do practice these professions and many thinking about this I found a link that said “Dirty Jobs that Pay Well”. Little did I know that maybe getting your hands dirty might be worth it.

Here are the dirty jobs and their salaries.:

1. Veterinarian -Median annual salary*: $73,621

2. Waste Management Engineer -Median annual salary: $67,249

3. Trauma Surgeon- Median annual salary: $273,160

Reflective Essay

Reflective Essay

Coming to this class, I didn’t know what to expect. Everyone whom I had spoken to would tell me that it was a fun class where you would be doing different “creative” things and assignment. Little did I know, I would learn a lot more than what I expected in this class, and would learn to love trying to see where my creativity would take me.

The first few weeks we would try to define what we thought was creativity and would broaden our creativity with different assignments like finding the similarities between a refrigerator and a cat- and my peers creativity really impressed me. We also had to find the different uses of a pool noodle- which was hard because you are just used to using it when you are in the water, but at the same time impressive the numerous ways that they could be used.

Our environmental outings were the assignment that I enjoyed the most. Being taken outside my comfort zone and going to places I had never been to before and trying new things, helped me expand my creativity as well. I went to an art gallery-a place I have never liked to go, but it was the first time I actually appreciated the art. I also went to the Comedy Improve for the first time, and really enjoyed it. I ate my first Krispy Kreme doughnut, and now I am addicted to them. I also went to Washington for the first time and loved my time there . Most importantly, being able to interview someone who I thought was creative made me find the beauty in other people’s jobs- such as a cake artists’.

Another great assignment was our Very Creative Person presentation. This presentation made me want to search for the person who I thought was extremely creative because of his/her field. I ended up choosing Sylvia Weinstock because I had always heard of her, and her cake decorating business whom all the artists turn to for an event or celebration. Her variety is superb and her creations are outstanding. This old lady has an impressive resume and clients that make you want to call and order a cake for yourself.

Most importantly, what I treasure the most of this class is the amazing people I have met. We are all very different people with different personalities, but we have gotten along great. I have enjoyed this semester like never before, thanks to these amazing friends. I would love to take other classes with them and I am eager to see them in the future.

I have undoubtedly learned what creativity really is and that everyone can interpret it in very different ways, but when it comes down to it- everyone has their own definition of creativity and are all valid. I first started thinking that creativity was being able to draw and paint- something I clearly can’t do, but little did I know creativity isn’t just that- its what drives many everyday, and what inspires everyone to be who they are and do what they do.

Washington

This Thanksgiving I had the opportunity of spending it with my family in West Virginia but I first went to Washington to meet up with my brother and my sister. I was extremely excited because I had never been to Washington and I had heard so any great things about it. Little did I know I would find a place extremely different from Miami, but that at the same time I would love.

Washington is extremely different from Miami. The buildings are all very structured and similar and very historic. It is even somewhat dark and gloomy. Once you start driving around Washington you get to see so many different monuments that it is hard to keep up. I was only there for a few hours because we had to start driving to West Virginia, but the little time I was there and driving around I was able to experience Washington in another level. There are so many different things and places to go and experience that it is a place I would recommend to everyone. I personally, can’t wait to go back!

VCP- Sylvia Weinstock

SYLVIA WEINSTOCK : LEONARDO DA’VINCI OF CAKES

WHO IS SYLVIA WEINSTOCK?…

Sylvia Weinstock is undoubtedly the most recognized cake artist and decorator in the United States. Sylvia Weinstock is the grande dame of cake design, one of the first to use imaginative forms for wedding cakes—introducing butterflies and bees, for example, to brides who had previously known only flowers. Her 30-year-old company, located in New York City, has created cakes that have been featured in publications ranging from Modern Bride to the New York Times and has created cakes for the Clinton White House as well as numerous celebrity weddings such as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Donald Trump, Kimora Lee Simmons etc.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN…

While on a family ski trip to Hunter Mountain, Ms. Weinstock was introduced to retired pastry chef George Keller. He took her on as an apprentice and it wasn’t long before she was supplying desserts to Hunter area restaurants every weekend while her husband and three daughters skied.

BUSINESS BREAKTHROUGH
Ms. Weinstock created a wedding cake for her daughter’s friend, who was getting married. The young woman worked in a take-out food shop and put the cake on display in the window. A chef, who worked for the then premier society caterer in New York City, Donald Bruce White, asked where the cake came from, and Ms.Weinstock started getting cake orders from the caterer each weekend. Then orders began coming in from women who attended the catered receptions, and the rest is history.

INTERVIEW WITH VISUAL VAMP  (Blog digest that covers decor fashion, interior design, travel, trends, art, music, television, movies, life.)

VV - How did you get cast in Gossip Girl?
SW - Just a guests at the wedding. We actually did the wedding cake for the series. They thought it would be cool for me to just appear.

VV - When did you start your business?
SW - I started my business 30 years ago.

VV - Do you still enjoy it?
SW - Yes, I still enjoy it. Love meeting the clients, overseeing the designs that are so beautiful.

VV - Do you and Ben ever think about doing something else? And who will the business be passed onto? Family? Sell it to a huge conglomeration for big bucks?
SW - When I am finished with it I will probably close it. The business is really me.

VV -You have incredible style. Your glasses are your signature accessory. I have only seen them on Carrie Donovan, and maybe on Carol Channing. I love them. Where did you get them?
SW - My glasses have become my logo and represent me. It is my look. I have them over 20 years.

Note: Sylvia’s glasses are tortoise shell and cost $1500. She has one pair!

VV - I also love all the big necklaces you wear, art pieces really. Can you
tell me about your collection.
SW - I like drama in clothes, jewelry and I guess in life itself.

VV - You are very fit. How is that possible for someone who is around sweets
all day?
SW - I live a life of moderation, watch the diet and walk. I do not exercise.

VV - I love your hair. Did you ever color it? Where do you get your hair
cut?
SW - As for my hair, I never dyed it, I like the grey. Gets lots of respect.

VV - What part of New York do you live in? Do you like to decorate anything else besides your fabulous cakes (like your apartment)?
SW - I live in Tribecca, over the store, just as Andrew Goodman. My home is comfortable, filled with stuff collected throughout the years.

VV - Who is Andrew Goodman?
SW - . Andrew Goodman owned Bergdorf Goodman the store on 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. Shame on you!! Not to know my favorite store.
VV - Oh yes of course! I have been away from New York too long!

VV - As you know I gave it all up and ran away with an Argentine tango dancer. We wrote a book, and we teach all over the world. You told me you would love for you and Ben to take tango lessons with us. Let me ask you a question that I ask all of my new students: Why do you want to learn to dance the Argentine tango?
SW - Tango is so sexy!

VV - Anything at all that you would like to say?
SW - I was never able to chill out as they say. I need the action. Perhaps that is why I love NY, my business…

Environmental Outing # 4

This past Wednesday, Irene invited us to the comedy improv at Coconut Grove where she performs! I was extremely excited to go because I had never been to one. I was also a bit skeptical about it because I never laugh at anything or anyone! If I know the person is supposed to be funny- I won’t laugh and I never laugh and comedy movies. On the other hand, I have friends who make me laugh with just their personalities. But I decided to give it a try.

First of all, I noticed I have really bad sense of direction. Not even with my GPS was I able to get there! (Thanks Vanessa for giving me directions!) and  when I got there I noticed how many people actually enjoy seeing these performers! It was packed! I sat with the girls  and waited for Irene to come on stage. The performers before her were good, and I did laugh at some of their comments. Then came Irene to the stage, and since I know she is naturally funny- she obviously made me laugh. She was great and she felt really comfortable on stage even with everyone staring at her. I would have never been able to do such thing!

After this experience I have grown to respect comedians and what they do. They have a talent not everyone has and the way they dominate the stage is impressive. I can’t wait to go to the next improv!!!!

Creative Interview

Cake Decorator: Laura Rodriguez

Devine Delicacies formally known as Devine Delights

Cristina Campos: What does creativity mean to you?

Laura Rodriguez: I will have to say is being original basically. Whatever you think of is 100% your work. Just being original and unique for me is creativity.

CC: Did you always know you would want to be a cake decorator?

LR: Yes, I began having an interest in sugar arts since I was a little girl in Cuba. Everything about it just amazed me.

CC: How did you get started in the field?

LR: I got started at a very young age. I always loved this art and little by little I started working in different places and learning from different teachers and professionals. I also went to a cake decorating school in Puerto Rico.

CC: What is Devine Delicacies known for?

LR: We are known for the use of Australian paste. We also have a title in drawing, decoration and sugar arts, but Australian Paste is what we are known for.

CC: Where do you get your ideas?

LR: We really get our ideas from anywhere. We are a custom cake store, so we have all different types of customers coming in. They ask us for many specifics and we have to do the best we can in delivering as close as possible what the client wants. So we might get our ideas from our clients but really we can get it from anywhere- we can be at the movies or the mall and suddenly be inspired or even from looking at the sky. I would say its just talent and having a creative eye.

CC: How do you keep your ideas from flowing?

LR: Well, its just that I love so much what I do, that I constantly see myself looking at anything with the purpose of seeing it in a cake. So my ideas are constantly flowing. As I said, you can look at anything and instantly get inspired and think “Oh, this might look great in a cake, I should try it”

CC: What is your creative process?

LR: We don’t really have a creative process, it’s whatever you come up with or see. Its something in our minds that sparks creativity - it’s just there.

CC: When and where are you most creative?

LR: Like I said, anything can spark your creative side. I don’t have to be sitting in a room filled with all my tools for cake decorating to be inspired or go outside to be looking for an idea. It can happen at any time, anywhere.

CC: How do you break out of a creative slump?

LR: I think networking with other vendors and other people in the field helps a lot. We look at their work and even be inspired from it. Also we like to look for new ideas in the fashion industry. Fashion is so innovative it is constantly changing, so we like to turn to it to get inspired once again. We look at a design on a wedding gown and get that design or pattern or linen and put in on a cake.

CC: Who do you look up to in the field?

LR: We definitely look up to Sylvia Weinstock, she is amazing at what she does. And also Martha Stewart. We have a lot of their books and their work because it is just impressive. But we do come up with and create most of requests that come in. Just because we like what they do doesn’t mean we want to replicate it- we like to be unique while at the same time admiring their talent.

CC: If you couldn’t be a cake artist, what would you be?

LR: A singer.

CC: And finally, what advice would you give someone going to a creative field?

LR: Have you heard of the novel “The Secret”. Well, we try to apply it to what we do. When we first started this company we had just arrived from Cuba and 2 years later our father passed away. We were devastated and we had to be very positive and thinking positive to be able to keep the company going. I will definitely tell them to be positive and confident in what they do. Having a positive mentality really helps to get you going and helps you move forward and get what you want.

Supplementary Article # 6
Talking today in class about Australia made me think of the wonderful trip had the opportunity to make with my family. My sister went for a study abroad program in Melbourn and we visited her for 2 weeks. It was a dream vacation. We visited the most amazing places and had the best time. My sister decided that she wanted to take us to places tourists wouldn’t visit and make of our time worthwhile. Yes, we did visit a zoo, an aquarium, a rainforest and played in a golf course that had wild kangoroos all over but the best parts was when we went to see the animals in the wild. We went off road for 3 hours and found an area filled with wild kangoroos. IT WAS AMAZING!!! After that we rented a cabin right next to the beach and stayed for a couple of days. Then we went to a place called “surfers town”. It was a town who dedicated their lives to surfing and everything about it had to do with surfing. I could go on with the list of things we did, but for me the most impressive and breath taking was when we visited the Twelve Apostles. The Twelve Apostles are a collection of natural limestone stacks standing just off shore in the Port Campbell National Park, on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. It was be far the most beautiful place I had ever visited. Everytime I look at the pictures I remember the great times we had and makes me want to go back and absorb the great places there are to visit in Australia as well as around the world.
